Addis Ababa, May 23, 2023 – The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa officially reopened the Col. John C. Robinson American Corner on the campus of St. Mary’s University (SMU) near Mexico Square in Addis Ababa.  The Col. John C. Robinson American Corner has been closed for in-person programs and services since the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020.

Ambassador Tracey Jacobson, Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, officially opened the Corner along with President Dr. Wondwosen Tamrat of St. Mary’s University.  During her remarks, she noted that this latest American Corner is another example of the American peoples’ commitment to Ethiopian youth.  Attending programs at American Corners is often the first step for students interested in studying in the United States.  Education USA resources and counseling as well as English language programming, in-person services and hands-on practical skills, such as STEM and Maker Space Tools, are among the programs that are free and open to the public at all American Corners in Ethiopia.  The Ambassador commended the continued strong collaboration with St. Mary’s University, which also hosts an Embassy English Language ACCESS program.

The Corner is named after African-American aviator Col. John C. Robinson, who was appointed Commander of the Ethiopian Air Force by Emperor Haile Selassie and led the new Air Force during the second Italian-Ethiopian War of 1935.  He also played a role in the establishment of Ethiopian Airlines, and in fact, one of Ethiopian Airlines’ Boeing jets is named in his honor.

The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa currently maintains American Corners in Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar, Jimma, and Dire Dawa; the American Corner in Mekelle remains closed.

  1. Thank you US Embassy in Addis Ababa. The contributions of the US to Ethiopia is historical, deep-rooted and of substance and immeasurable quality par excellence. The wide ranging and all compassing assistance of the US Government and the American public have been indelibly written in the annals of history and still observable as the institutes, education centers and extensive diplomatic and cultural ties built over the decades for the people of Ethiopia and with the Ethiopian people. To name a few, the Ethiopian Airlines, the current University of Gonder medical school ( the first medical school in Ethiopia then as Gonder Medical college), the Haremaya Agricultural college in the then Harraghe province ( the first of its kind in the nation), the YMCA, the service first motto centered civic sector of the 1950s are enduring footprints and everlasting friendship of the US and the people of Ethiopia.

Great thanks and admirations to our forefathers and foremothers of yesterday, whose unparalleled diplomatic skills, wisdom, solid experience, insight and foresight laid the groundwork for this unbreakable bond between the people of the US and the Ethiopian people,

  2. ETNRY: Humble Short Commentary based on ULTIMATE EXAMPLE of FREEDOM of EXPRESSION in the ULTIMATE
ADVANCED COUTRY in the UNIVERSE >>> THE BELOVED UNITED STATES of AMERICA. (USA).

    NOW TO MY HUMBLE SHORT COMMENTARY;
In my daring suspicion, the ultimate benefit may not be for the ORDINARY PEOPLE of ETHIOPIA.
It is just a feeling, daring and based on the so-called “freedom” of expression.
In any case, TIME will tell the ultimate objective of the extremely most POWERFUL NATION AROUND THE GLOBE.
We shall see, with inherently forced patience!!! Please note, I am repeating the old old saying of an ‘underdeveloped’ country — ETHIOPIA., ITSELF!!!
    THE END

  3. Is America Ethiopia’s ally? Should Ethiopians trust America? What is in it for America?

Ethiopians will be fooling themselves if they count on America. All America wants is a destabilized, weak, and America-dependent Ethiopia. The Ethio-American relation track-record is riddled with mischief, dishonesty, back-stabbing, carrot-and-stick policy, etc.

Why doesn’t America stand with Ethiopia in Ethiopia’s development endeavors like the GERD? Why does America side with TPLF & Egypt against Ethiopia’s national interest? Didn’t America impose sanctions/embargo on Ethiopia and revoke AGOA at the height of COVID? Didn’t America halt the WB-IMF approved loans to Ethiopia? Ad nauseam!

Lately, America has stepped-up its multi-prong & multi-regional operations in Ethiopia. Why are there 40,000 Americans in Ethiopia? Does America really care about black Col. John C. Robinson? Isn’t America the Architect of Slave Labor, and birth place of Black Lives Matter/Taking a Knee [Colin Kaepernack]/etc.? Doesn’t charity start at home?

  4. Once again Good Ole USA tirelessly at its best! It still has its doors open for those who want to further their education in USA. Ask those two thugs both in Beijing and Moscow to best that. The one in Moscow is killing the youth in Ukraine and itching to use a nuclear bomb on the innocent citizens there. The one in Beijing is busy stealing ‘cans of sardines’, coffee and precious metals from the old country and he is topping that with eavesdropping and voyeurism. Don’t start with me about those two ruffians! Please don’t!!!

  5. I_Mognu, the typical cadre and apologist of the PP. Diplomacy and advocacy for a given nation’s interest are complex games that must be played by the talented, the gifted, the committed and also by the ones called for the occasion.

Since the dictator Mengistu’s era, Ethiopia and Ethiopians have suffered by the incompetent and untalented cadres swarming the once illustrious offices of Foreign Ministry, various Embassies of Ethiopia across the globe and more.

PM Aklilu Habtewold then a very young assistant foreign minister traveled to the US, advocated for Ethiopia, negotiated with the then TWA airlines and made possible for the creation of Ethiopian Airlines. Either do the job or let others who have the training and the talent do their job.

Foreign Minister Haile Minase was on Face the Nation some 60 years ago with Emperor Haile Selassie. He was a US educated, seasoned diplomat ( with a PhD and a law degree from Columbia).

Emperor Haile Selassie was himself a seasoned diplomat. He personally advocated tirelessly and made possible the creation of the first agricultural college of its kind in Ethiopia then in the province of Harrarghe.

The Empress Zewidtu Memorial Hospital was a very high quality hospital in Addis Ababa that was administered by the health care team of the Seventh Day Adventist doctors and nurses, quite a few of them from the USA.

Neither historical facts nor established diplomatic legacies are understood by communist wanna be fanatics and the current t ethnofanatic lunatics of the past 30 years.

Every time these morons fail and mess up, they blame others, typically the straw man, the “West”,”antiEthiopians, anti revolutionaries, reactionaries” blah, blah, blah.

Stop imprisoning journalists, stop stifling freedom of expression, stop displacing millions and millions of the poor,,children, women, men the elderly, stop massacring, stop looting and stop embezzling. Every time you point your finger at other,4 of your other fingers are pointing back at you as the culprit or the accomplice.

    • 1. No way in hell at Ethiopia’s expense: “Talent & Gift” does not mean “Bending for America/White Supremacist West [WSW] and selling Ethiopia to Egypt & the WSW.”

Why do Blacks flood the WSW’s streets screaming “Black Lives Matter / No Justice; No Peace / I Can’t Breathe / ad nauseam?” Why would anybody wish that for Ethiopians?

      2. Zewditu Hospital: I broke my tiny arm twice playing soccer [with adult classmates]. Dr. Bonn and two white nurses took care of me. I didn’t know that that was a privilege.

      3. Give me a Break: Isn’t it your Haile-Selassie Monarchy’s Colossal Incompetence that brought Fascist Derg to power? Those Fascist Scumbags robbed me of my childhood!

Does – “ዋይ-ዋይ-ዋይ” ሲሉ! “የረሐብን ጉንፋን ሲስሉ…” – ring any bell to you? Were you Monarchs so dumb that you couldn’t even think of air-dropping bread for starving Amaras? Aren’t you ashamed when you show up in Amara Activist hats? በተሰቀለው!

      4. Look, I am no fan of your Haile-Selassie Era ‘Monarchy’ crap! The so called ንግሥት Saba went to sleep with the so called ንጉሥ Solomon and you have to be Ethiopia’s king, queen, prince(ess), ልጅ, etc.? What are you guys thinking? This is not the Stone Age!

Advice: Israel has arranged one last flight for Falashas [out of Ethiopia]. You & Ilk had better get on board that flight & claim your ‘royal ancestry’ in Jew-occupied Palestine. Be the king, queen, prince(ess), etc. of Jews and dethrone Jesus! እኛ ዕዳ አለብን እንዴ?
