ADDIS ABABA –Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions (CETU) disclosed that Sheba Leather Industry and Semaita Marble Factory have completely been destroyed and the locations of workers not known, Ahadu FM 94.3 reported.
In its first visit to Tigray Regional State ever since the signing of the peace agreement, CETU had a chance to hold meetings with the leadership of the factories. President of CETU, Kassahun Follo, said that as the two factories were destroyed completely during the civil war, it is impossible to restart the operations. The two factories had a total number of 1,800 workers whose whereabouts are not known for the time being, according to Kassahun.
Kassahun said that Almeda Textile Factory was also destroyed fully by the war and workers who were displaced from the factory including others who fled Wolkait Sugar Factory and Hiwot Mechanization Farm are currently located in the Regional Capital, Meqelle
CETU further said that Messobo Cement Factory and Adigrat Pharmaceuticals Industry have partially gone operational.
Kassahun called up on the Regional and Federal Governments to support the functionality of the factories in the Region. CETU pledged to offer training to workers serving at factories that have already gone functional after the war.
CETU has a branch office and 70,000 members in Tigray Regional State. The Confederation said in its Face Book page that it has donated two million birr to the Branch Office.
