Leaked audio from UN staff meeting says no concrete facts on allegations sexual violence in Tigray

The allegations of sexual violence and rape as weapons of war in Ethiopia were rather based on anecdotal evidence, based on what is said to be a leaked audio from a UN virtual meeting

A reportedly leaked audio of United Nations agencies staff meeting in Ethiopia, published by Ethiopian Disapora Politics on YouTube, says no concrete facts on allegations of sexual violence against women in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

The audio is said to be from a virtual meeting of UN Staff in Ethiopia.

What stands out from the leaked video is that the allegations were primarily based on  anecdotal evidence.

“Important to note is that we do not really have verified information, clearly something that is happening but in terms of data, statistics a lot of it remains anecdotal,” said Maureen Achieng, IOM Chief of Mission to Ethiopia and Representative to AU and UNECA.

Letty Chiwara, UN Women Representative to Ethiopia, was in attendance at the online meeting. She said, “…escalating cases of sexual violence and rape being perpetrated against women and grils, and in some instances also media hype – I would call it – around rape being used as a weapon of war, which we know, sometimes is true, sometimes it is not true.”

The alleged leak has caused conversation in social media among Ethiopian activists and foreigners who seem to closely follow the situation in Ethiopia.

Bronwyn Bruton, who works for the Atlantic Center, reacted to the leaked audio saying ” The disconnect between @UN

statements on rape as a weapon of war and the CURRENT evidence at hand in #Ethiopia is problematic & merits your outrage. Just as important, though: I hope all will praise the professionalism and integrity of UN local & regional staff on the call.”

“Motherland,” apparently anonymous, reacted to it saying  “Indeed, it is important to hear from those who are on the ground and understand the context, rather than sensationalizing and taking things out of context for the sake of media consumption.”

Many Ethiopians have been skeptical of the allegations of sexual violence and rape as weapons of wars in Tigray. Some point out that Tigray region lived with gender based violence including rape against women long before the Ethiopian government launched in November 2020 what it called law enforcement operation.

    Humble Comment, 18 August 2021
Without meaning to degrade the subject matter, one is tempted to ask ; Is this a new phenomenon? Of course, the shameful dreadful crime upon women is done by man of any class every day, every where, at any time, at any place. It is a the most shameful crime upon humanity.

QUOTE: A reportedly leaked audio of United Nations agencies staff meeting in Ethiopia, published by Ethiopian Disapora Politics on YouTube, says no concrete facts on allegations of sexual violence against women in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. UNQUOTE

HONESTLY, one can’t help being lost and shocked by that statement i.e. quote: ” no concrete facts on allegations of sexual violence” unquote I am lost, I am puzzled, I am embarrassed to write this commentary, and I am shocked. They want to see “concrete facts” ?!?!?!?!?!?!?? OH! LORD !!!! A repetition of the action ?!?!?!?!? OH LORD!!! What are the Respectable, Honorable, Diplomats of the Highest Order trying to defend — and WHY!?!?!?!? Obviously, they will go to anything length to protect what they want to defend. OH! Lord, Have Mercy Upon US

  2. TPLF had the audacity to fabricate lies and present them as facts. As late musician Nipsey Hussle dad said, TPLF is like a hollywood studio in manufacturing lies. This UN story and others should not surprise anyone.

The problem was that the Ethiopian government failed to rebut to these fabrication, thus the media took them as facts because too sensational and too gross to ignore. The notion that 750 priests were massacred in Aksum to steal the Ark of the covenant move it to Addis, 12000 women were raped, some of them were told to stay on trees to be raped for 10 days and then to slaughter their children on the tenth day, or Ethiopian soldiers taking videos while killing and throwing the corpse of their victim to the river, burning farms (while Ethiopia was sending $100B worth of food to Tigre) and more. Also Imagine having 750 priests in one place in Tsion church in Aksum, worse having a huge festival the next day. There were many tell-tale signs of fabrication of lies, but the media and the international community ignored it and the Ethiopian government did not vigorously complain or held a new conference or sent out a press release to challenge them.

  3. How come BBC, AP, Reuters and the gang are not saying anything about this? Just curious! I tell you, money talk and can make you just shut up! Would someone lend my 30 billion US dollars in pilfered money so I can make every major media outlet keep its mouth shut about this? Hello! Anyone out there listening? Hello! Hello! I gave up!!!

  4. I am from Tigray. For over a decade, my Tigray region had led Ethiopian regions with the highest number of rape cases, and this was happening during the time the TPLF was at the helm of power in Ethiopia. I recall our Tigray women holding massive protests in the city of Mekelle to speak out against TPLF officials raping Tigray women and girls with impunity. For instance, a high-ranking TPLF official who was accused of raping 50 women and girls was allowed to walk free simply because the TPLF considers itself to be above the law.

Sadly, it is the TPLF officials that are now using their own crimes as a weapon of propaganda war against both the Ethiopian and Eritrean military forces. Every woman in Tigray knows who is committing the crimes. It’s not the Ethiopian or the Eritrean forces. For this reason, it is an insult to our Tigray women to blame their trauma and suffering caused by rape, on those who never committed the heinous crimes. It is also tragic when the TPLF perpetrators are the ones accusing others of their own crimes. Please pray for Tigray. Thank you.
