Oromo Liberation Front – Shane gunmen carried out another attack in Guji zone of Oromia region, Ethiopia, say authorities in the region
Gunmen on Saturday killed seven people in West Guji including Gelana District Security and intelligence chief, Jarso Bekalon.
BBC Amharic News on Monday cited the district communication head, Gebeyehu Yadete, to report that the attack took place on Saturday after 5 p.m. local time in the locality of Chelbessa Shoro.
Furthermore, he said that the security chief and other members of the security apparatus in the area were travelling to Bore kebele when the gunmen launched the attack.
Two militia, three Oromia special forces, the district security head and intelligence officer in the district were killed during the attack, said the report by BBC Amharic News. Also, two of the gunmen are reportedly killed.
Seven others are reportedly wounded, but it is unspecified if their condition is life-threatening or otherwise.
It is linked to Oromo Liberation Front (OLF shane) armed group – which is said to be mainly operating in Guji and Wollega region of Ethiopia.
There have been recurring killings in Guji by gunmen that are said to be the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF -Shane). In March of this year, the group launched an attack when district authorities from the region were having a meeting, killing seven people.
Last year, about 12 security forces were killed Guji during operations.
Gelana District is adjacent to Amaro District of Southern Ethiopia Nations and Nationalities region, one of the ethnic based regional states in Ethiopia.
The latest attacks came days after Oromia regional state claimed that it had weakened the radical ethnic Oromo radical nationalist group, which is believed to be financed by external powers among others, military capability to pose danger to the region’s peace and security.
There had been ethnic based massacres in Guji zone in the past three years.
