Following a status update from activist Seyoum Teshome, a rumour was circulating on social media that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is shot and in critical condition.

The status from Seyoum indicated that the Prime Minister was flown overseas after he was shot.

The office of the prime minister issued a brief update which was released on facebook.

“We ask members of the public to be vigilant about fake news circulating about Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s well being on social media.”

PM Abiy Ahmed was not seen by the public for several days. When the British foreign Affairs Minister visited the country on Friday, he did not meet with Abiy Ahmed.

There is a mixed reaction to the rumour on social media. Some express real concern for his safety. Others tend to see a sinister motive with the aim to gauge public reaction to the rumour.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is normally active on social media ; he regularly shares an update to his fans. Not today. And that in itself is a matter of concern for his fans.

There are also those who express anger to the activist for publishing the rumour (Seyoum Teshome) on social media. For those groups, even if it happens such news needs to be handled with care for they constitute security vulnerability to the country.

  1. many are sharing their concern to the public and couldn’t hide the fact that he was shot but he will be tweeting soon as usual.Stay tuned mahara militia

  2. It shows the infantile behavior that is dominant in our so-called private media. Due diligence in sourcing news and properly verifying them is not in working ethics of our media folks yet. In the advent of social media where self censorship is being overshadowed by misunderstood competition, the frenzy to put raw and unverified ‘news’ out for public consumption is in full swing putting innocent lives in danger. We had seen it. The phrase ‘the police was her to kill me’ was the lethal switch to turn the gullible youth into a savage mob killing and pillaging. Some of these miscreants in the media who spread unverified raw ‘news’ know what they are doing very, very well. They may be driven by covert motives for what it is. Many of them are outside the country here in North America, Europe and Oceania spewing such reckless and dangerous rumor from their comfy homes. To be famous and garner ratings is one thing but to do that at the expense of those glorious people and that gem of the colored they live in is a different bowl game. I wish they think twice about the old country before thinking once about Alexa’s ratings. It is sad and I am afraid such reckless and unprofessional handling of news will be with us unabated well into the future for simple reason that such outlets are owned and run by lone wolves. Their site is not regulated and supervised by any kind of governing board. These are individuals who sit around or stay in their beds all day long just churning fake news after fake news just to feed on the raw emotion of their readers. It was Adanech bint Abiebie last time and now this. Does this person hold death wishes for PM Abiy that sent him in a mad rush to spread around such unverified news? Somebody may be wishing that country to descend into confusion and chaos. This is totally recklessness at its best.

  3. Even if that was true (and some may continue wishing it until they go down the drain) – what will be the alternative? Think, think. you stupid dullard…..Ethiopia will survive, but you may not.
