Archbishop Abune Gabriel passed away on Saturday in his residence at the patriarchate in Addis Ababa, according to Ethiopian Orthodox Church sources.
He was serving as the archbishop of Sidama, Gedeo, and Burji diocese in his last role. He was not serving since October of this year due to an unspecified illness.
Before his service in the above-mentioned diocese, he has served in different dioceses including Eritrea (before it seceded from Ethiopia), Jerusalem, and North America, among others. He was ordained as Archbishop in 1979 during the third patriarch, Abune Teklehaymanot.
He studied theology in Russia and the US and has a Ph.D. degree in Christology.
He will be laid to rest at the Menbere Tsebaot Kidist Selassie ( Trinity cathedral) in Addis Ababa on Sunday starting at 10:00 a.m.
