Chinese construction firm is expected to complete Abay bridge project within three years

Abay Bridge Construction is officially kicked off on Friday. Top government officials including Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonen, Federal government minister for Transport Dagmawit Moges and Amhara regional state president attended the official ceremony project launch.
The bridge is said to be 380 meters long and 43 meters wide. The Chinese firm, China Communication Construction Company (CCCC), has secured the contract and is expected to complete it within three years time.

According to Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA), the project cost is about 1.4 billion Ethiopian Birr which is about $US 48 million with the current exchange rate. The Federal government of Ethiopia is covering the full project cost.
When completed, the project is said to help ease traffic jams in one of Ethiopia’s tourist’s city, Bahir Dar, apart from other economic and social benefits to the residents of the city and the country as well.
In a similar development, the construction of Bahir Dar to Tis Isat Fall, also one of the major tourist attractions for Ethiopia, is also launched.
The distance between Bahir Dar and Tis Isat is 22 kilometers. Of which 9 kilometers of the road project is a multi-late asphalt-concrete road. The remaining is a single lane road, according to a report by Amhara Mass Media Agency.
Ethiopian Road Authority will spend about 767 million birr and the construction will be completed in less than two and a half years.
