Ethiopia is releasing 1087 prisoners across the Federal prisons in the country on the occasion of Ethiopian New Year which will be celebrated on Thursday this week across the country.
Berhanu Tsegaye, Federal attorney general, said that for the 2012 Ethiopian year government has given amnesty to 1087 prisoners who remained behind bars for the crimes they committed were not pardonable, in accordance with Ethiopian government law, according to a report by state-affiliated media Fana Broadcasting Corporation (FBC).
367 from Kaliti prison, 28 from Ziway and 439 are from Shewa Robit prison which is along the Addis Ababa Mekelle road.
The federal government and ethnic-based regional administrations have made it customary for some time now to release prisoners on the eve of Ethiopian New Year.
Amhara regional state has granted amnesty to 4329 prisoners (90 of them are women) on Monday after the regional council approved it FBC reported citing Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA)
This week Ethiopia opened a notorious torture chamber, Maekelawi, located in the center of the capital Addis Ababa for a public visit after works of transforming the former torture facility to a museum was completed.
Ethiopia is poised to celebrate justice week this week before the Ethiopian New Year.
