In an emergency meeting held on August 31, Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Regional council elected Restu Yirdaw as acting president of the region.
He will be replacing Million Mathoes who is removed from the position, possibly in connection with violence in Sidama zone of the region on July 18 and after. It was the council that removed Million Mathoes.
According to a report by the region’s communication affairs office, the council unanimously approved the appointment of Restu who was sworn in the same day before the region’s council.
Before his appointment for his current role, he has been serving in the federal government as Commissioner for Sports Commission.
