Asemahegne Asres is communication head of Amhara regional state. In an interview with Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA), he claims that he was detained in a guest house where the alleged coup leader, Asaminew Tsige, was staying and coordinating part of his operation. He recounts how he survived, and from what he says, attackers did not seem to have interest to kill him.

He also said that he observed exchange of fire in Amhara Region Police Commission and that some of the leadership in the region’s security apparatus were detained.

Asemahegne admitted that he was not in the crime scene where the region’s president, Ambachew Mekonnen, his adviser Ezez Wasse and the region’s attorney general, Migbaru Kebede, were shot.

However, his narrative of what has unfolded in the bloody evening of Saturday June 22, in Bahir Dar, is certainly relevant to understand as to what has happened.
