A grenade explosion at Soker Hotel in Nekemte reportedly killed one student who was said to be an apprentice and wounded nine others.

The victim died in a hospital and his name is not disclosed.

According to the VOA Amharic report on Thursday, the grenade attack happened on Wednesday around 7 p.m. local time. Five of those who are wounded in the attack are customers of the hotel while the remaining four are employees of the hotel.

Feleke Alemu, the owner of the hotel, confirmed that the attack happened. This is the second grenade attack on his hotel. Last week, a grenade was thrown which killed one person and wounded seven others.

So far, no entity took responsibility for the attack. And the owner said that he has no entity or individual to point to as he has no issue with anyone.

However, he said that the attack that happened last week might be related to a strike that was reportedly called on Facebook in the town, Nekemte. He said his hotel was open for service during the week.

Mayor of the city also confirmed that the attack happened and that no entity took responsibility for it. He added that he can not speculate about it and the responsible entity will be determined after “investigation” – which he said is underway.

About two weeks ago, there was another grenade attack in Anphilo Mugi, still in Nekemte region, and six people were killed, an incident which government authorities linked to an armed Oromo Liberation Front that vowed to continue “fighting for freedom.” On the other hand, the rebel groups accused government authorities for death.

In January of this year, the armed group robbed 17 government and private banks.

Wollega, in west oromo region of Ethiopia, is one of the regions where the Ethiopian Defense Force is deployed for security reasons.

  1. Why is the Federal police quick to act on civil resistance like Eskinder Nega?
But when it comes to lawless and violent Oromo regions like Nekemte, they are so ‘tolerating’.
