Ethiopian Airlines pilot quick decision saved passengers, crew lives

Had it not been for quick decision of Ethiopian Airlines pilot,landing in bad weather situation at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, could have caused crash landing and possibly loss of lives

Lagos bound  777-300 Ethiopian Airlines Plane with 393 passengers avoided a crash landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on Wednesday, Nigerian News Sources reported. 

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reporter, whose name is not mentioned , was in the flight and Sahra Reporters cited him as to what happened : 

“…almost 5-hour flight from the Ethiopian capital to Lagos had been smooth until the pilot attempted to land at the Murtala Mohammed International airport.

Rather than landing on the first touch-line of the runway, the pilot over short it, due to rain and heavy wind, landing on the third touch-line…”

The Pilot of ET 901, whose name is not mentioned ,too,in the report,  had to act fast, and maneuver the plane back to the air, and hovering, waiting for a chance for a safe landing.  According to the Sahra Reporters, the plane was hovering between “Lagos and areas suspected to be in Ogun.” And there was panic and distress, and many passengers were praying and chanting spiritual songs, the report added. 

The plane landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport after twenty minutes of initial landing attempts. 

Ethiopian Airlines authorities in Nigeria have confirmed the incident.  Firihiewot Mekonnen, General Manager of Ethiopian Airlines in Nigeria, said that the plane experienced bad weather upon landing and had to make a go-around for a safe and smooth landing. She added that the pilot’s decision is in line with industry procedure, as reported by Sahara Reporters. 

The source added that notable Nigerians like Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian president, and  Director General of Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) Ambassador Ayoola Olukanni, among others, were on board of ET901.

  1. Now due to the plane crash of the plane the Ethiopian government is getting extra unexpected income from the lawsuit settlement.

    Ethiopian Airlines will get more money compensation from Boeing when it crashes than if it doesn’t crash. The government of Ethiopia is only after $$$$$.
