A group in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s chartered city and the seat of the continental organizations, like African Union, with an estimated over 4 million population, announced today the establishment of a new social movement called Addis Abebachin.

The group aims to work on advocating for the basic needs of one of the leading diplomat’s cities of Africa, Addis Ababa.

A report by US based Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT) cited the interim president of the movement, Surafel Zewdu, to report that the movement identified the main challenges that the city is facing before embarking on its work.

The interim president added that the movement has been in the making for about four months now and it is founded based on the needs of Addis Ababa.

“The movement believes that Addis Ababa’s affairs are that of its own residents’,” Surafel is quoted as saying.

Noting that Addis Ababa has never elected its own leaders so far (it has been customary that political appointees lead the city as mayors), Surafel Zewdu pointed out that the movement will work on focusing on the matter; meaning enabling residents to elect their mayor.

ESAT’s report also indicates that the movement is already recognized and their next steps is mobilizing the city and have members.

Addis Abebachin also called of residents of the city to support its work to ensure that its objectives are achieved.
