Major General Mehari Zewde Gebremariam appointed head of United Nations Interim Security Force

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres appointed yesterday Major General Mehari Zewde Gebremariam of Ethiopia – Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei.

Major General Mehari Zewde will replace Major General Gebre Adhana Woldezgu who is completing his assignment on April 23, 2019, according to a report by the United Nations.

The report by the UN added that Major General Gebremariam has over 37 years of experiences with in the Ethiopian Defense Force and is also a council member in the ministry of National Defense.

In his last position within the ministry, he served as Head of Human Resources Main Department of the Ethiopian National Defence Force and was responsible for human resource management of the Defense Force.

Last week, three Ethiopian soldiers were killed in Abyei when an Ethiopian Helicopter crashed in the premises of United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).
