Barely a week after two Mosques were blazed in what was said to be premeditated arson in Este town of Southern Gonder (borkena reported about it), another Mosque is reportedly burned in Endabet Jara Gedo district of Southern Gonder yesterday.
According to a report by Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA), the accident happened around 3 p.m. local time.
South Gonder Zone Communications Affairs Head, Tilahun Dejene, told AMMA by phone that doors of the Mosque were opened and scriptures were blazed. Then the mosque itself caught fire. However, residents in the area joined together and put the fire out.
Residents in the area have also reportedly requested the regional government to send investigators to the scene.
In a statement issued following last week’s arson in Este town, the region’s Islamic Affairs stated that organized groups with political motive are behind the arson and emphasized that it has nothing to do with the followers of the two religions. The regional government deployed task force to investigate the matter but it is unclear if the investigation is completed or not.
Ethiopian Religious Council condemned the attack today in the strongest terms.
In a similar development, Churches are reportedly burned in Halaba Qilito town today in Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region – according to confirmed reports on Social Media. Organized youth in the town are said to be behind the fire. It is unclear if there is any causality from the incident.
