Incarcerated Bereket Simon, whom political pundits in the country are likening him to the Nazi’s Joseph Goebbels, appeared in a count in Bahir Dar today, seat of Amhara regional state, two days after he was arrested from his residence Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa.
He appeared along with Tadesse Kassa, another suspect who used to be director of government conglomerate TIRET.
In the court, Bereket made a case for bail rights which was denied by the court on grounds of gravity of the crime he and Tadesse are suspected with.
As well, Mr. Bereket asked the court to transfer the court proceedings to Addis Ababa claiming that the atmosphere[seemingly political and security] in Bahir Dar is problematic for his safety, security and for the court proceeding. However, the court rejected that too on grounds that the alleged crime is committed in Amhara region.
According to Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA), Bereket appealed to the court that they are facing mistreatment in custody. The particular case he raised is that the food they are served with is not prepared with care and they do not get it on time too which could affect his health.
As well, he told the court that they are [him and Tadesse] insulted as “thief, criminal and murder” by a youth crowed near where they are arrested.
The court reportedly ordered relevant prison authorities to observe the rights and dignities of the suspects, provide them with security protection and keep them in Bahir Dar prison.
