Residents in Afar region in the Eastern part of Ethiopia are reportedly protesting due to security problem in the region as transport to and from the region is stopped due to road closures.
According to social media reports, armed groups from ethnic Issa communities are launching an attack against Afar. And roads are reportedly closed from three directions.
Federal Police Commission has confirmed that Awash-Galafi road is closed due to “security problems in the region”, as reported by Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).
EBC also cited public relation office of the Federal Police to report that police authorities are working with Federal authorities and authorities in the region to resolve the problem peacefully.
The region got new leadership recently after discussions between officials of the party that govern the region and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
As in the case of other regions which have been affected by security problems, many Ethiopians seem to believe that Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is behind the security problem in Afar region.
