Ethiopian Religious Institutions Congress is a body that is composed of all major religious institutions, in the Islamic and Christian religious traditions, in the country.

After a meeting, the congress called on Ethiopians today to pray and fast for two months in accordance with the practice in their respective faiths, according to a report by Amhara Mass Media Agency (AMMA). The leaders called for two months long fasting and prayer for the peace and unity of Ethiopia.

As ethnic politics, which has been given administrative support structures and political cover in the past 27 years, gain prominence and take the path of radicalization, the stability of the country is being compromised which is why the state of peace and security situation in the country became top agenda for the Congress.

Last week, leaders from the congress and elders approached leaders of one faction of Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) in an effort to convince the organization to end its conflict with Oromo Democratic Party (ODP), a party that is governing Oromo region of Ethiopia where the former is operating as an armed rebel. The outcome of their effort is not known yet, but it does not seem to be positive. Yesterday, Dawud Ibsa led faction of OLF (the entity they approached), which is an armed opposition operating in areas like Wollega and Guji in the west and southern parts of Ethiopia respectively, has issued a statement condemning the government for killings in parts of Oromo region under its occupation.

Killings of civilians and internal displacement has become challenges outside of Oromo region of Ethiopia as well. It has happened in Benishangul region of Ethiopia. It has happened in Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region, as named by the ruling coalition, part of Ethiopia. It has happened in Somali Ethiopian Region. Drums are being beaten for war in Tigray. Angry political entities in Amhara region are expressing penchant for responding in kind, including for the experiences in the past 27 years, to Tigray which is sometimes mistaken for Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Seen inwardly, Ethiopia is not in a good political and security shape at all although there are efforts by government and some opposition parties, who tend to understand ethnic politics for what it is -a trouble for the country and regressive -, to rescue the country from the deadly quagmire it is in.

In the past few months alone, thousands of civilians and government law enforcement bodies have been killed in different parts of the country. And Ethiopia has now become a leading country in the world in terms of number of internally displaced people.

Ethiopian Religious Institutions Congress is also calling for an end for displacement of Ethiopians and blockading of roads leading to different parts of Ethiopia which made mobility of goods and people from region to region difficult.

As well, it called for political parties to resolve rivalries through dialogue and called on all Ethiopians to stand in guard for peace and against displacement.

Furthermore, they called on media to carry out their jobs ethically and, in a way, not to aggravate conflict.
Federal and regional governments are demanded to shoulder their responsibility to maintain rule of law and fight anarchy.
