Shashemene city administration is responding to public anger on a video footage that turned out to be viral.
It was shared on social media on December 25 and shows elders being beaten by a group of youngsters from the city. It was reported to be a politically motivated attack by Qeerroo against supporters of the pan-Ethiopian political party, Ginbot 7.
The city authorities say the video footage is from more than a month ago and the violence was between followers of Islamic faith, and it is has been resolved with the involvement of mediators including mayor of the city, according to a report by Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).
Haron Kedir, the city’s Communication Office head, says the video was deliberately disseminated on social media to tarnish the image of Shashemene city.
Critics point to the fact that it happened in the city and should have been made public before it was exposed on social media so as to give a lesson to those with similar sentiment.
Many Ethiopians took the video as a demonstration of the collapse of Ethiopians social and moral values.
