Seven ethnic-Tigreans working as daily laborers on a farm are abducted while seven others escape and disappear to the jungle, eye witnesses who claimed that they are themselves hiding in the jungle told VOA Tigrigna program – as per VOA Amharic report on Tuesday this week.
It happened in MaoKomo district, Shensheba locality, Benshangul Gumuz regional state, Western Ethiopia.
There are also investors who told the above mentioned news source that property has been plundered. They also believe that the gunmen selectively targeted ethnic Tigreans.
The gunmen who perpetrated the attack have carried Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) flag, added sources who spoke to VOA Tigrigna service on condition of anonymity.
The regional authorities admitted that there is a security problem in the region but do not seem to agree that the attack is targeting ethnic Tigreans. They say it has happened before and has affected other ethnic groups as well.
Last week, before news of alleged attack on ethnic Tigray emerged, the regional authorities expropriated land given to investors, who are mostly from Tigray region, on grounds of violations of rule. And their tax free privileges for imported machinery and vehicles were revoked.
Today, Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reported that a Command Post instituted to deal with security problems in Benshangul Gumuz region and neighboring Oromia regions commenced its work.
It is composed of regional authorities from Benshanful and Oromia as well as Federal police and members of the Ethiopian defense force. It will be based in Assosa, capital of Benshangul, and will also be coordinating its work with Sudanese security forces, according to Fana.
Several months ago authorities were made to resign on grounds of security problems in the region which claimed civilians lives and displaced tens of thousands of residents.
