Land mine explosion kills 10 in Wollega-Benshangul region,Western Ethiopia

10 people are killed today due to land mine explosion that hit passenger’s minivan in West Wellega and Benishangul Gumuz region, reported Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporations citing The Reporter.

Eight of them died on the scene and two died in hospital.

The minivan with a plate number BG 00280 was travelling from Assosa, Bensahngul Gumuz region’s capital, to Maokomo district when it accidentally hit a land mine planted in non-asphalt road near Gure refugee camp.

There seem to be one survivor as the van was reportedly carrying 11 passengers.

Authorities in the region claim that they are investing as to who planted the land mine and the motivation behind it.

The region has been affected by strings of violence for many months now.

Secret military training camps run by non-state actors who are believed to be counter reform have been closed in Benshangul region after hundreds of civilians were killed and tens of thousands were displaced.

Radical Oromo ethno-nationalist organization has established a de facto like administration in most parts of Wollega region.
