Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz arrived in Ethiopia earlier today for an official visit. Foreign Minister Workeneh Gebeyehu greeted the chancellor upon arrival at Bole International Airport early in the morning local time.
Chancellor Kurz also met and held discussion with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The latter briefed the former regarding political changes made in the country since he took power as prime minister.
According to a press release from the office of the Prime Minister, Kurz is updated about what is changed politcally in the country including the return from exile of what were known as opposition parties since then.
Prime Minister Abiy also told Mr. Kurz that Ethiopia is now calling opposition parties as “Competing Parties” as part of the commitment to change the political atmosphere in a way to make it conducive for building democratic system.
In terms of bilateral relations between the two countries, PM Abiy Ahmed expressed interest in focusing on strengthening relations in the areas of trade, investment and technology transfer. To that effect, Ethiopia is considering opening an embassy in Austria.
Commending the changes made in Ethiopia, the visiting Austrian Chancellor, on his part, expressed interest in fostering bilateral relations with Ethiopia. He also said that he would like to augment EU-Africa relation and transform development cooperation to economic cooperation hinged on innovation.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Chancellor Sebastian Kurz met first when the former was visiting Europe at the end of October this year.
