Over 40 high ranking management ( and known to be military generals in most cases) and Security personnel in charge of METEC (Metals and Engineering Corporation), the largest military industrial complex government Corporation, are arrested today in the capital Addis Ababa, reported Ethiopian Reporter.

The Reporter, which cited anonymous sources, added that senior METEC management and intelligence officials were arrested as they were having a meeting in the Corporation’s building, which is cited as Amoraw, in the vicinity of Imperial Hotel in Gerji.

The reason why the officials are arrested is unknown and the lists of officials arrested is not disclosed so far.

However, it is known that they are detained at Addis Ababa Police Commissioner, where former Somali regional president was arrested.

A report by Wazema Radio this week said that government is undertaking a very secretive investigation into corruption scandals as the activity to reorganize the corporation is underway.

News of their arrest came days after Abiy Ahmed unveiled in Gonder during a meeting with community members that his administration undertook a meaningful reform in the military in terms of composition of leadership in the command structure which used to be dominated by ethnic Tigreans. In a report published yesterday, Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT) cited what it called “Sources close to the Prime Minister” to report that over 160 military generals have been terminated.

METEC has investments in a range of sectors in the economy but it was more active in the construction and mechanical engineering sectors. However, the corporation is often accused of poor project completion and grand Corruption.

Brigadier General Kinfe Dagnaw(Pictured above), who led the corporation as director until he resigned in April 2018 following Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed election as prime minister within the ruling party, was recently in the media defending METEC, a corporations Ethiopians seem to see as corrupt and incompetent.
