“Former Somali region president Abdi Mohamed attempted to escape by breaking the window [of room where he is detained],” says police, as reported by state media, Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).
Police told the story to the Federal High Court during the hearing of Mr. Abdi today.
“Mr. Abdi was arrested in police department office in the interest of his security and health but he broke the glass window and tried to chocke the guard on duty,” investigative police told the court today.
However, Mohammed Abdi denied that he did what police said. For him, “It is a deliberate character assassination and plot to attack him,” as quoted by EBC in Amharic.
Mr. Abdi also alleges that he is arrested in an inconvenient cell which could affect his health. “A man with mental issue tried to break into my room and attack me,”which has caused a security concern, he told the Court.
The Investigator police, on his part, told the court that Mr. Abdi is staying in the same condition just like any other inmates.
Police has not yet completed the investigation and the Court granted 10 additional days to complete it. Mr. Abdi will be back to court on October 29.
He was arrested days after Somali regional state lifted the immunity of some members of the regional parliament in August 2018 in connection with violence in the same month.
At least 29 people were killed, hundreds wounded and tens of thousands of people displaced. More than ten churches were burned, in some cases along with priests.
The attack was mostly ethnic-based affecting only certain language groups (namely ethnic-Amhara and ethnic Oromos ) and Abdi Illey is believed to have ordered the attack.
