Breaking News : Abdi Mohamoud Omar (Abdi Illey) resigned as Somali region president

Two days ago Somali region’s president Abdi Mohamoud Omar was reported to be in custody. Now the region’s media reports the he resigned.

Ethiopian Somali region president, Abdi Mohamoud Omar (Abdi Illey) reportedly resigned, as per a report from the region’s media, Ethiopia Somali News Agency.

His loyal forces, Somali Region Leyu Haile, reportedly fought against Federal law enforcement units. Abdi Mohamoud Omar has been an ally of corrupt TPLF military generals who are allegedly involved in illicit trade in the region. Tigray regional state issued a statement condemning what it called Federal government intervention in Ethio-Somali region.

Government Communications Affair Minister, Ahmed Shede, officially announced today that Ethiopian government deployed members of the defense force to the region to protect civilians.

The minister mentioned, according to Fana report, that Somali region Leyu force closed roads between Jijiga and Harar as well as the road to Djibouti, in an apparent move by the region’s president to protect his power.

There was also a movement, according to Ahmed Shede who is himself from the region, to secede the region from Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Human Rights Commission called on for the Federal government today to defend the human rights of Ethiopians in the region.

There has been an ongoing ethnic and religion based attacks and killings in the region for the last three days, and at least 29 people were reportedly killed. More than ten Ethiopian Orthodox and Protestant churches are reportedly burned. Nine people were killed in Dire Dawa yesterday and four of them were children according to a report by Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).

Abdi Mohamoud Omar (Abdi Illey) has been implicated in egregious in Human rights violations.
