Yomif Kejelcha had a reputation for team work during world championship in 2017 but what he did to Solomon Barega at Lausanne IAAF Dimamond League 2018 is horrible.
Yomif Kejelcha had a name for teamwork for the remarkable victory of Muktar Edris over the legendary Mo Farah at the IAAF World Championship in men’s 5000 meters in August 2017.
But what he did to Solomon Berga, another rising Ethiopian star in the distance, at the IAAF Diamond League in Lausanne, Switzerland, about 100 meters to the finishing line overwrites his reputation of teamwork.
Apparently, he was tripped by Solomon Barega in the last 200 meters of the 5000 meters race in what seems to be rather an accident.
Yomif Kejelcha was raged by the incident and swung to dragging Solomon down by holding his shorts. He remained on the ground while Solomon managed to get back on track and finish the race second after Birhanu Balew, another Ethiopian who runs for Bahrain. Of course, he was disqualified too.
Ethiopians took to social media to express their outrage and looks like Yomif Kejelcha will pay for his rude behavior.
The incident, which will undoubtedly go down as a dark spot in the history of Ethiopian athletics and perhaps as one in the history of IAAF too, makes us question if there are changing values in Ethiopian Athletics Federation which is now under the leadership of one of the greatest long distance runner in history, Haile Gebreselassie.
