Eritrean diaspora could soon have the option of flying Ethiopian Airlines to Eritrea as the airlines is commencing a flight as early as September, if all goes well.

After two decades of no-peace-no war relation between Ethiopia and Eritrea, which affected the economic, social and cultural relationships between peoples of the two countries, Ethiopian Airlines is poised to resume a flight to Eritrea.
The news came after relation improved significantly after a decision by prime minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration to accept the Algiers peace agreement of December 2000.
Eritrean president Isayas Afeworki responded, albeit weeks after the call for peace, by sending a high-level delegation under Eritrea’s Foreign Affairs minister, Osman Saleh.
It was during a state dinner organized for Eritrean delegation at the national palace that prime Abiy Ahmed announced that Ethiopian Airlines is resuming flight to Eritrea sometime in September of this year.
“Those of you who longed for taking a stroll in Massawa [one of Eritrea’s port], get ready as Ethiopian Airlines is resuming flight to Eritrea in September,” said the prime minister with a glittering smile of hope.
Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Tewolde Gebre Mariam, is cited by Bloomberg as saying flights would resume once formalities, apparently between the two countries, is completed which may mean that the flight could actually start sooner than mid-September.
Eritrea has hundreds of thousands of diaspora population across Europe, North America and Australia – among other parts of the world – and Ethiopian Airlines with hundreds of destinations across the world could provide them with an option to fly to Eritrea.
Prime minister Abiy Ahmed is hopeful that Ethiopians and Eritreans will celebrate Enkutatash (Ethiopian New year) together. And he has a message for Ethiopian singers: get ready to sing in Asmara for Enkutatash.
President Isayas Afeworki’s high-level delegation returned back to Eritrea yesterday. Eritrean president and Ethiopian prime minister are to meet “soon”, according to Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu and it seems like it is going to happen in Eritrea.
