Abiy Ahmed is in Sudan in his second trip abroad as prime minister of Ethiopia ; talk to focus on regional issue
Abiy Ahmed, Ethiopian prime minister, is in the Sudanese capital Khartoum for two days official visit. He was received at Khartoum International Airport by Sudanese president Omar Hassan Al-Bahsir and his high ranking officers, according to Ethiopian state media.
His trip to Sudan came just a day after he visited project site for the Grand Renaissance Dam in what is now Benshangul regional state in western Ethiopia.
The prime minister was in Djibouti two days ago where he met with Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, president of Djibouti, to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries ; Ethiopian state affiliated media reported that the two leaders agreed on economic integration and joint investment in certain areas including in port infrastructure.
In Sudan, he is expected to hold talks with Albashir on bilateral and regional issues. As well, he will have a meeting with Sudanese business community.
Omar Hassan Albashir government has been supportive of the dam project over the Nile which caused an outcry from Egypt and subsequently to tense relation.
Sudan signed agreement with Ethiopia during Hailemariam Desalgne administration to create a joint border security force.
Ethiopian farmers along Ethio-Sudanese border accuse Ethiopian government of handing over Ethiopia’s,and the accusation specifically points to TPLF leaders who have been allies with Sudan since their time as guerrilla forces, land to Sudan.
When the new Ethiopian prime minister visited Gonder a week or so ago, residents raised the issued of land that is said to be given to Sudan. He pledged that he would discuss the matter with Sudanese president Hassan Al-Basir.
The prime minister’s visit to countries in the region is seen in a positive light by some political observers but his administration is yet to be clear about foreign policy objectives and strategies to achieve them.
