The central committee of Amhara National Democratic Movement (ANDM) is holding a meeting in Bahir Dar, reported the region’s news source Amhara Mass Media Agency.
The meeting is expected to be completed in two days.
While the focus of the meeting is said to be the implementation of agreed-upon issues during the last meeting within ANDM and EPRDF (Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front), discussion on current Ethiopian affairs is also among agenda items.
ANDM played a crucial role, as the region’s communication head Nigussu Tilahun disclosed, in the election of Abiy Ahmed as prime minister of Ethiopia.
The party is still criticized for being “subservient”, according to critical voices in the opposition at home, to Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) which is the dominant party in the ruling coalition. However, there are also those who hope that ANDM will transform itself to be an agent of change.
No leadership change was made during the party’s evaluation last month; Gedu Andargachew remained president of the regional state while Demeke Mekonen, who withdrew from the race for prime minister position, remained chairman of the party. Demeke Mekonen is also the deputy of the new prime minister, Abiy Ahmed.
