Finally Tassew Woldehanna is picked as Addis Ababa University’s next president
February 12, 2018
The Ministry of Education appointed Professor Tassew Woldehanna as Addis Ababa University’s next president, according to a report by Fana Broadcasting, pro-government media with access to an insider information. His appointment is effective as of today.
He was selected among two other finalists; Professor Bekele Gutema and Dr. Jeilu Omar.
The report by Fana added that University Board, Faculty, Students and from the individuals from the industrial sector were included in the selection committee.
Tassew Woldehanna’s profile published on International Growth Centre indicates that he has worked as a part-time Assitant professor in Agricultural Economics and Rural policy at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Farm and off-farm employment are identified as his research interest.
Immediately before his appointment as Addis Ababa University’s next president, he has been teaching economics at Addis Ababa University.
He holds an MSc in Agricultural and Environmental Economics and Policy and a PhD in Economics from Wageningen University, Netherlands.
He also worked as a researcher at Ethiopian Development Research Institute, the Centre for the Study of African Economies at Oxford University, and the Department of Agricultural Economics at Michigan State University, USA, according to information published Young Lives.
Addis Ababa University has long been a very politicized tenure and scholars with no connection and partisan interest in the regime in power were not able to hold the office.
Tassew Woldehanna is appointed at a very difficult time in the history of the regime in power with widespread protest across the country and deepening crisis from within the ruling party coalition.
It is to be remembered that Dr. Merera Gudia, who is a chairman of Oromo Federalist Congress and was in jail for well over a year, and Dr. Dagnachew Assefa were dismissed from Addis Ababa University for political reasons.
