Hailemariam Desalegne will hold talks with Sisi over stalled dam issue
Ethiopian prime minister Hailemariam Desalgne is in Egypt for an official visit. Egyptian president Abdul-Fatah Al-Sisi initiated the visit when he invited Hailemariam for an official visit. Eritrean president Isayas Afeworki was in Egypt for a two days official visit.
According to Ethiopian state media, Hailemariam will attend the 6th Ethio-Egypt heads of states meeting in addition to having bilateral talks with Egyptian president. Hailemariam is also expected to make a speech at the Egyptian parliament although there are reports that some members of the Egyptian parliament have opposed that he should not make a speech.
The talk between the two heads of states is expected to be dominated the Nile and the Mega dam which Ethiopia is constructing over the Nile.
In September, trilateral talk in Cairo between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia on the issue of technical impact assessment of the dam failed which led to an exchange of war of words between Egyptian and Ethiopian authorities.
Last week, Egyptian leaders disclosed that they have no intention to go to war with Sudan and Ethiopia after Sudan was alarmed by developments along its the Red Sea coastal area; closed the border with Eritrea and reinforced its military position. Sudanese action was triggered by the rumor that Egyptian forces are in Eritrea which the Eritrean government denies.
There does not seem to the anticipation that Ethiopia and Egypt will reach an agreement over the issue of the dam as Egypt is insisting that colonial time agreement should be applied to resolve the Nile issue.
Sudan is on the side of Ethiopia on the issue of the Dam.
