Ibrahim Shafi, a prominent Ethiopian journalist reportedly died in Kenya where he was given political asylum. Activists and journalists who know him closely as an outstanding journalist in difficult times in Ethiopia are very much shocked by the sad news, from the social media updates of many of them.
A graduate of political science and international relations at Addis Ababa University, he was jailed in the wake of 2005 national election along with opposition politicians and journalists.
Sources close to him say that he was suffering from knee problem from prison torture at one of Ethiopia’s notorious torture chamber and was ailing in Kenya, where he passed away.
He worked as deputy editor of Addis Guday, a popular weekly Amharic which was closed down by the Ethiopian government in 2014.
His friends remember him as an outspoken critique of the system in Ethiopia. He was also known to as an outstanding sports journalist.
From social media reports, it appears that his funeral is going to be in Ethiopia.
