Ethiopian Athlete Sofia Assefa is declared silver medal winner in the women’s 3000m steeplechase event of the 2012 London Olympics after Russian athlete,Yuliya Zaripova,stripped off her gold medal win on grounds of doping.
Silver medal winner Tunisian athlete Habiba Ghribi is now a gold medal winner. She will collect gold medal returned by the Russian Athlete. Milcah Chemos Cheywa of Kenya,who was ranked fourth at the time, will be awarded Olumpic Bronze medal which Sofia Assefa will return in exchange for silver medal.
Disciplinary Commission of the International Olympic Committee disqualified Yuliya Zaripova after “Re-analysis of Zaripova’s samples from London 2012 resulted in a positive test for the prohibited substance dehydrochlormethyltestosterone.”
The Guardian reported that the Russian anti-doping agency already banned Yuliya Zaripova from athletics events for a period of two and half years. But the decision was backdated from 2013.
Fana Broadcasting reported that Sofia collected the London Olympic silver medal from Dagmawit Girmay whom the report described as Member of International Olympic Committee. Youth and sport minister, and Ethiopia anti-doping agency officials were present during the ceremony.
“I would have been more happier if I was awarded this medal at the time [during London Olympics in 2012],” Sofia is quoted as saying by Fana Broadcasting.
