Dr. Negeri Lencho -the new communication minister says is committed to press freedom. Ethiopia is currently under state of emergency. Directive announced to implement the state of emergency strictly restricts freedom of expression including accessing some media outlets.
Many journalists in Ethiopia are thrown to prison charged under “anti-terrorist” legislation and some are sentenced to as many as eighteen years in jail. What led to incarceration of many journalists, however, is critical reports about the regime in power. The state of press freedom in the country is crippled after government mounted crackdown on free press for which the regime is criticized by reputable human rights organizations.
