US Suspends Some Aid to Uganda Over Anti-Gay Law

(VOA) Ugandan officials say the United States has suspended some aid to their health ministry because of the country’s harsh new anti-gay law.

The officials say cooperation between the ministry’s AIDS program and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control is on hold while the U.S. reviews relations with Uganda.

It is unclear how much aid is being withheld, but at least 50 Ugandan health workers have lost their jobs.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed the anti-gay law last month. Those found to be engaging in gay sex face life in prison.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry compared the law to Nazi Germany and South African apartheid. Denmark and Norway have cut millions of dollars in aid to Uganda because of the law.
