Merga wins third BOclassic New Year’s Eve run

Ethiopian World cross-country vice champion Imane Merga celebrated his third victory at the BOclassic New Year’s Eve run after an incredibly thrilling finish in 28 minutes and 43 seconds.

Merga, who had already defeated Olympic champion Mo Farah in Bozen/Bolzano, stood up to 2010 World half marathon champion Wilson Kiprop (Kenya) to retain his 10km title by the tiniest of margins. with just one millisecond in South Tyrol.

The drawn-out finish over 300m was probably the most exciting the BOclassic has ever seen with Moroccan Aziz Lahbabi, third in the World Junior 5000m Championship in 2010, rewarded with the third place for his fast start.

Best non-African was American Chris Barnicle (USA) who finished eighth, one second after four-times BOclassic winner – Kenyan Edwin Soi. Read more…
