A day after Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) organized peaceful demonstration in Dessie and Gondar, towns in north central and north western Ethiopia respectively, more than 42 members of UDJ party are jailed on July 15,2013 in the capital Addis Ababa, Finote Netsanet reported.

Among the arrested in the capital are party officials at the district level in Addis Ababa. So far 42 of the jailed members and officials are disclosed by UDJ party. Members of UDJ party were arrested while distributing flyers which calls for peaceful resistance in opposition of “Anti-terrorism” legislation which the government is using as a principal “legal” repression instrument to throw critical voices to jail.

Recently, the party has become more active and engaged in mobilizing Ethiopians with the motto “voices of millions” to eventually organize a massive peaceful resistance to multi-faceted repression by the ruling TPLF/EPRDF party.

The demonstration in Dessie and Gondar were meant to be part of this massive movement against the repressive “anti-terrorism legislation,” and a movement for democracy and justice. Although the ruling party allowed the opposition rallies to take place Dessie and Gondar, it has managed to sabotage the demonstrations by deploying its cadres and security personnel door to door and intimidate people not to take part in the demonstration.
